Portavogie Rangers began their Division 1C campaign with a 3–1 defeat away to Suffolk at Suffolk Park, Belfast.
Despite controlling the majority of the possession and seeing much more of the ball over the course of the match, Rangers were punished by a clinical Suffolk side. Defender David Rutherford’s first-half penalty gave Portavogie hope after the hosts had established an early two-goal advantage, but a third Suffolk goal after the interval secured the points.
The home side made the brighter start and opened the scoring after eight minutes. Suffolk worked their way through the centre of the Rangers defence before the advancing attacker found the finish to put Portavogie behind.
Rangers attempted to settle into the contest and began to enjoy longer spells in possession, but Suffolk doubled their advantage in the 24th minute. A low delivery into the penalty area reached a home attacker in front of goal, who converted from close range to make it 2–0.
Portavogie responded almost immediately. Rangers were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute and Rutherford stepped forward to take responsibility. The defender kept his composure, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and finding the net to reduce the deficit to one.
The goal gave Rangers renewed belief, and the visitors continued to control possession as they searched for an equaliser. However, they went into the half-time interval trailing 2–1.
Alex McMaster was introduced in place of Harry Smith ten minutes after the restart as Rangers looked for a route back into the match.
Portavogie continued to dominate the ball, but Suffolk restored their two-goal cushion in the 62nd minute. The hosts attacked down their right, with the ball carrier cutting inside under pressure before driving his finish across goal and into the far corner.
Rangers kept pushing and continued to enjoy the majority of possession, but they were unable to turn their territorial dominance into further goals. Suffolk defended their advantage and saw out the closing stages to claim all three points.
The 3–1 scoreline was harsh on a Portavogie side that held the majority of possession and controlled long periods of the match. Rutherford’s confidently converted penalty was another positive, while Will Moore was named Rangers’ Man of the Match for his performance. Portavogie were ultimately punished for failing to make their dominance count.
