Derby honours even at packed New Harbour Road.
A massive crowd watched Portavogie Rangers and Portaferry Rovers serve up a pulsating local derby, with Rangers racing into a two-goal lead before the visitors fought back to earn a 2–2 draw.
New Harbour Road was packed for one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the NAFL Division 1C season, with a huge attendance creating a superb derby atmosphere long before kick-off.
With local pride and league points at stake, Portavogie Rangers made a flying start and appeared to be heading for a memorable victory after goals from Alfie McKee and Matthew Moore put Peter Doherty’s side 2–0 ahead inside 23 minutes.
Following difficult away trips to Malachians and Dunmurry YM, Doherty made two changes to his starting side. David Rutherford and Jay Cully came in, with Dylan Carlisle again captaining Rangers.
Roared on by the home support, Portavogie began with real purpose and opened the scoring after only six minutes.
Rangers kept an early attack alive on the right and Rutherford was given room to deliver into the penalty area. His cross picked out McKee, who attacked the ball inside the six-yard box and directed his header beyond the Portaferry goalkeeper.
The early goal lifted an already lively crowd and gave Rangers the confidence to continue taking the game to their local rivals.
Portavogie doubled their advantage on 23 minutes.
Moore timed his run beyond the Portaferry defence and showed excellent composure after reaching the ball ahead of the advancing goalkeeper, guiding a low finish across him and into the far corner.
New Harbour Road erupted for a second time as Rangers took firm control of the derby.
At 2–0, Portavogie had given themselves an excellent platform and looked capable of adding to their advantage. The visitors, however, began to respond as the tackles became stronger and the intensity increased.
Jude Carlisle was shown the game’s first yellow card on 27 minutes as both teams battled for control in midfield.
Portaferry continued to apply pressure, particularly from set-pieces, and found a route back into the match on 39 minutes.
Rangers dealt with the initial delivery into a crowded penalty area but could not fully clear the danger. The loose ball remained alive inside the box and was eventually forced home from close range.
That goal changed the momentum of the closing stages and, four minutes later, the visitors were level.
A deep delivery from the right was met inside the Rangers penalty area, with the resulting header looping beyond Harry Wallace and dropping into the far side of the net.
Having controlled much of the opening half, Rangers went into the interval level at 2–2.
After four goals and a frantic opening 45 minutes, the second half developed into a tighter contest.
Both sides knew the next goal could settle the derby and there was no shortage of commitment, but clear opportunities became harder to find as the two defences stood firm.
Doherty turned to his bench on 64 minutes, with Thomas Rotherham replacing Ben Adair. Robbie Adair came on for Jude Carlisle seven minutes later, while Ethan Woods replaced captain Dylan Carlisle during the closing stages.
Rangers continued working for the opportunity to regain the lead, urged forward by the large home support, but Portaferry remained difficult to break down and neither side could produce a decisive fifth goal.
Jay Cully’s assured performance on his return to the starting line-up earned him the Man of the Match award.
There will be disappointment that a two-goal advantage was not converted into all three points, particularly after such an impressive opening to the game.
Nevertheless, Rangers produced a positive response following two demanding away fixtures and played their part in an entertaining derby occasion in front of a tremendous New Harbour Road crowd.
The local bragging rights will have to wait. For now, the honours are even.
