Rangers come up against one of the division's early pacesetters on a testing Thursday evening at Shore Road.
Portavogie Rangers were beaten 4–0 away to Malachians on Thursday evening, in a Division 1C fixture against a side who arrived with a 100% record from their opening two league games.
Two goals in each half settled it for the hosts, but Rangers stuck at the task for the full ninety minutes and remain well placed in the early table.
Following Saturday's excellent 5–1 win over Ballynahinch United at New Harbour Road, Rangers made two changes to the starting eleven, with Harry Smith and Ben Adair coming in for Jake Sloan and Reece Cully.
Dylan Carlisle again captained the side, with Luke McCormick between the posts.
Malachians, now third in the table and one of five sides in the division still unbeaten, set a high tempo from the first whistle.
The hosts were in front inside six minutes, working the ball wide and delivering into the Portavogie box to punish the visitors before they had properly settled.
That early setback set the tone for a first half in which Malachians earned a steady stream of corners and free-kicks, and Rangers spent long spells defending the edge of their own area.
To their credit, the visitors stood up to plenty after that. McCormick and his back line dealt with scramble after scramble, with bodies thrown in front of goal, but the pressure told again before the interval, a second goal arriving from another delivery into a crowded box.
At half-time it was 2–0, and the message at the break was to keep the shape and keep going.
Rangers did exactly that. Lee Moore, Thomas Rotherham and Reece Cully were all introduced in the second half, and the changes gave the side fresh legs at a stage of the game where heads could easily have dropped.
Malachians added a third and a fourth to complete the scoring, but there was no capitulation from the visitors, who kept working right through to the final whistle.
There is no getting away from the result, and the group know they were second best on the night against sharp, direct and clinical opponents who deserved their win.
But the wider picture remains a healthy one. Four games into the campaign Rangers sit sixth of thirteen in Division 1C on six points, with a 2–0 win away at Ballywalter Rec and that emphatic home victory over Ballynahinch United already banked, and seven goals scored across those two outings.
Alfie McKee leads the division's scoring charts on three, with Jay Cully on two and Ben Adair, David Rutherford and Dylan Carlisle all off the mark. There is no shortage of goals in this squad.
Malachians have now won all three meetings between the clubs, 2–1 and 3–2 last season, both of them close contests, so there will be no shortage of motivation for the return fixture either.
Attention turns quickly, with a Steel & Sons Cup tie away to Dunmurry YM at Napier Park on Saturday, before Portaferry Rovers visit New Harbour Road on 19 August.
